Something strange happens once February rolls around. Despite the freezing 19 degree weather, I feel like starting shopping for my summer wardrobe. I take a virtual vacation on the internet where I wear blue light blocking glasses instead of sunglasses and I swear I can almost feel the heat of the sun on my skin as I browse the tropical pages of sandals and swimwear trends for 2022. It’s the closest I get to a summer getaway, and if it happens, I’ll know exactly what swimsuits to pack.
There are two rules I like to follow when shopping for swimwear. The first is that I will never trying on a bathing suit in a store’s dressing room. A bathing suit should make you feel as warm as a summer day, and I do not do get that positive energy in the fluorescent locker room lighting. When you end up lying on a beach or lounging by the pool, you’ll be relaxed, tanned and confident. Put on some self-tanner in anticipation of your swimsuit order arriving, turn on some music, and make trying on the swimsuit fun.
My second rule is that swimwear trends are mostly just suggestions – at the end of the day, the only trend that really matters is feeling good about yourself. If you want to wear a string bikini, wear it! Luckily, if that’s not what you feel best in (or if your grandparents are joining the family vacation), many 2022 swimwear trends offer more coverage.
Both the monokini and the tankini are making a triumphant return and come in a variety of cut-out styles and cropped lengths. I look forward to wearing these Y2K inspired trends as a confident adult instead of desperately trying to emulate a cool girl vibe as an early 2000s college girl in a Limited Too tankini.
Besides my confidence, another thing that has improved since college is parties. If you’re having a pool party, the micro sequin swimwear trend is a must. And if you’re headed to the beach, a stylish long-sleeve jumpsuit or halter bikini top will keep everything in place for water activities.
Below, I’ve put together a comprehensive list of all the swimwear trends to consider before booking a flight, as well as the cute suits I can’t stop looking at.
I believe in second chances, and that applies to the tankini. The revival of the tankini is shorter than its original predecessor – think of it more like a crop top and less like a split piece. Tankinis come in strapless, halter, and triangle options, to name a few, so there are plenty of styles to experiment with (and ways to avoid weird tan lines, thank goodness).
A tankini is also a great hybrid swimsuit for vacations where you’ll be in and out of the pool, hotel lobby, and restaurants. Just put on a sarong and you’re fully dressed!

Aerie’s swimwear line is always an affordable option to shop for on-trend pieces. This pink triangle top comes in sizes XXS-XXL and three summery shades. If you like Aerie crossover leggings, you have to get crossed bikini bottoms matches this top.
If you’ve ever wanted to shine in the sun Twilight style, the micro sequin bikini trend will make your dreams come true. Sparkly bikinis started popping up in swimwear fashion last summer, and they’re sure to be a trend in their own right this season. A micro-glitter bikini has a special sparkle that makes for great vacation photos without looking too much on top. They’re also fun to dress up with stacked jewelry (à la Hailey Bieber) and ideal for special events like a bachelorette party on the beach.

Hello, golden girl! This sequined triangle bikini top is the perfect party costume. Capittana, the brand behind the bikini, is known for their hand-knit swimsuits – this one was made by my Peruvian artisans.
Paris Hilton called and she said monokinis were hot again. Celebrities wore the monokini trend a decade ago, and even now we know Kim Kardashian has an affinity for a good cut-out piece. While a monokini can leave you with awesome tan lines, it will also emphasize an hourglass body shape and make you many attention. It might take a few tries to find the perfect cutout shape, but once you get it, you’ll wear it over and over.

Halter tops are the ultimate fashion option for sexy girls to go out on, so why not apply the same thought when hitting the beach? A halter top will show off your collarbones and provide extra support if you plan on jumping in the waves. A great way to test out the backless top trend is to tie your trusty bikini straps by crossing them in front of your neck before tying them behind. If you love this look, go ahead and splurge on one of these halter bikini top options.

If you’ve spent cumulative hours staring at the big screens in Hollister and Abercrombie that showed popular surf spots like Huntington Beach in California, then you already have to know that the jumpsuits are super cool. There’s no reason you can’t look cute catching (or trying to catch) a wave! Wetsuits are sleek and sporty with long neoprene sleeves. If you want a more feminine look, opt for cutouts, floral prints or colorful details.
